A short history of Carew Manor

In the Domesday Book of 1086 there were two Beddington Estates in existence and these would be eventually united to create Carew Manor by Sir Nicolas Carew. In 1539 Sir Nicolas Carew was executed for treason and for a time his land was sized by the crown, then King Henry Vlll, however, it was later returned to Francis Carew under Queen Anne l. In 1591 Sir Walter Raleigh secretly married Elizabeth Throckmorton, one of Queen Elizabeth's maids of honour, the result of which was that she was expelled and Raleigh was sent to The Tower of London. It is said that after Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded by King James l in 1618, his body was buried in St. Margaret's Westminster whilst his head was buried in Beddington Park though this may just be a myth.

Due to a decline in the Carew family fortunes in the 18th Century, mainly due to gambling debts, the estate became run down so Carew Manor was rebuilt in 1709 and a couple of additional wings were added, flanking the Tudor Great Hall. Shortly after, however, a fire broke out which went on to destroy most of the interior of the building much of which remained in this sorry state until it was sold in 1859. Carew Manor became the Royal Female Orphanage Asylum in 1866 lasting in this role to 1939. Today is s a school as well as Council offices which also rents out its space for functions including weddings.

As well as tales of ghosts that haunt parts of the Manor and it's surrounds there are also meant to be some secret tunnels that connect it with Croydon's Archbishop's Palace and Nonsuch Palace in Cheam. In addition to add to what’s known as the Tudor Trail a 16th Century Tudor garden which includes a grotto has recently been discovered in the grounds by Archaeologists though the exact location is currently a secret.

Carew Manor - Surrey wedding photographer opportunities

For many of the wedding receptions that take place at Carew Manor, the wedding service has taken place in the 14th Century St Mary’s Church next door. So after capturing some confetti shots of the newly-weds on the road outside it is just a minute’s walk to the grounds of Carew Manor and up the path that bisects the lawn to the main building.

For wedding photography opportunities on a fine day, guests usually relax with a glass of bubbly in the quadrangle in between the front door and the entrance to the Great Hall where there is grass to spread out on as well as a small pond. Other areas for wedding photographs are the main front lawn which provides a pleasant backdrop for the group wedding shots and the Bride’s throwing of the bouquet as well as the playing fields at the back.

For some romantic photos of the Bride and Groom away from the reception celebrations, a short walk across the front lawn and off down the road on the left takes you quickly to the green and pleasant Beddington Park which also includes a little bridge crossing the River Wandle.

Inside Carew Manor the star of the show, apart from the Bride and Groom of course is the Great Tudor Hall, an original 16th Century Grade l listed building complete with dark wooden panelling and it’s wonderful Hammerbeam roof, a building technique quoted as being ‘the most spectacular endeavour of the English Medieval carpenter’ and present in such esteemed buildings as Westminster Hall, Hampton Court, Middle Temple Hall and Eltham Palace. The Great Hall is the setting for the wedding breakfast and later for the after dinner celebrations and so the wedding photographer will be ensconced here to capture the speeches, cake cutting, first dance and many other parts of festivities.
