A brief history of Leatherhead Register Office
Rather surprising to note, there has been a house on the site of Leatherhead Register Office now for over 700 years, it being first mentioned in the 14th century.
Its history has been directly affected by the political upheavals during the reign of Henry Vlll and during the historical periods of Oliver Cromwell and the reign of James ll.
Notable people who have lived here include Thomas Bloodworth who was the Lord Mayor of London during the Fire of London of 1666 and Edmund Tylney who in 1578 became Master of the Revels and whose role was to plan Royal entertainment and. With total powers of censorship he had a direct hand in licensing 30 of William Shakespeare's plays and it is known that politically volatile sections of his plays were deleted.
During the 18th century the Mansion benefited from Georgian improvements and between 1846 - 1878 it became a highly regarded grammar school for boys. During the 2nd World War it became a billet for Canadian airmen, later being sold to the council who used the ground floor as a public library.
In May 2000 it was renovated and a space was provided for the register office.

Direct access from the window side of the room takes you onto a conservatory which can be used for group wedding pictures if the weather isn't good.
The grounds at Leatherhead Register Office - further wedding photography opportunities
A door from the conservatory leads out onto a large terrace which in turn leads down into a large and very green and pleasant lawn area with a path around it that takes you through a lovely green arbour and passes a number of garden seats.
This area is perfect for some romantic and fun wedding photography and if time allows then you can venture further down to the River Mole.
Depending on the prevailing light, it can be very bright on a sunny day, and how busy the register office is group wedding pictures can be taken either on the lawn or on the steps leading down from the terrace.
Regarding parking, there are a few spaces at the front of the building but these are usually reserved for the wedding car, marriage registrars etc, this is however a large car park at the back.
Finally the staff at Leatherhead Register Office are very friendly and welcoming and this is a very relaxed and pleasant Surrey wedding venue.
