Wedding photographers in Surrey at Hever Castle

First of all, yes, Hever Castle is in Kent but we have included it here because it is on the border of Surrey and Kent and as we are proud to say that we are preferred suppliers at Hever Castle, well we felt it was right to include it here. In addition we've covered weddings at Hever Castle for many years and throughout the seasons and we love working there. So there we are, let's have a look at what Hever Castle has to offer...

With a history dating back over 700 years this picturesque, double moated 13th Century castle along with its splendid drawbridge and portcullis is brimming with Tudor portraits and fine furniture and is set in beautiful, tranquil surroundings.  Hever Castle is a stunning Kent wedding venue which has a lot to offer romantic couples in the way of romantic wedding photography.

Hever Castle – a brief history

Founded in 1270 the oldest parts of the Castle consisted of the large gatehouse, a walled courtyard or bailey, the moat and wooden drawbridge. Around 200 years later in the 1500's the Bullen family the then owners added a Tudor house inside the protective wall. Anne Bullen , one of the few children born to the Bullen's that survived infancy was to follow King Henry Vlll's sister Mary Tudor to court in France where she was later to be known as Anne Boleyn. As History tells us Anne Boleyn was fated to marry Henry Vlll in 1533 becoming Queen of England and then shortly after to be executed in 1536 in the Tower Of London on a trumped up charge of treason because she had failed to provide Henry with a son and heir to the throne.

Since those early days the main and most significant changes at the Castle was made by William Wardolf Astor an American millionaire who fell in love with Hever when he first set eyes on it in 1901. He subsequently bought it along with 640 acres of land in 1903 and spent millions on the restoration of the Castle, including new building work and creating the stunning gardens and lake.

As the Castle was too small to live and entertain in he built the 100 room Tudor style village that was to be connected to the Castle over the moat by a covered bridge. Interestingly every building is slightly different, be it in the varied use of stone and brick, plasterwork and timber, tiles and slates so that every cottage looks as if it was built by a different builder. In addition the gold and grey sandstone used to construct the Tudor Village was mined in the same quarry seams in nearby Ide Hill that was the source of the stone to build the original castle 600 years previously.

The Tudor Village was built in just three years (from 1903 to 1906) by 800 workmen and his overall grand design was completed by 1908 which included the gardens and the 35 acre lake which itself was largely dug by hand by 748 labourers and today Hever Castle is a Grade l Listed Building.

In 1963 the Castle and grounds were open to the public for the first time and in 1981 The Astors sold Hever Castle and the surrounding estate of around 3,500 acres to the Yorkshire based company Broadland Properties which is owned by the Guthrie family.

Hever Castle wedding photographer opportunities

As professional wedding photographers Hever Castle is a simply stunning Kent wedding venue that offers truly magical wedding photography opportunities throughout the year. There are three areas that are offered for weddings: The Astor Wing, The Castle itself and the recently refurbished Guthrie Pavilion.

The Astor Wing houses the Tudor Suite, three lovely appointed wooden panelled rooms that can accommodate up to 64 guests. The wedding ceremony takes place in the Tudor Suite Sitting Room, after which celebratory drinks can take place on the Tudor Suite lawns immediately outside and the guests then return to the cosy and welcoming Tudor Suite Dining Room for the wedding breakfast. Down a long and winding corridor is The Music Room which is used as a pre wedding ceremony lounge area and this connects to the Billiards Room which is available for play as well as the 21 exclusive guest bedrooms.

Weddings in the Castle itself are available from the months of November to February and the wedding ceremony takes place in the richly panelled walls of the Inner Hall, which can accommodate 64 guests and where there is also a minstrel's gallery for musicians to serenade the proceedings. Lit by candlelight it is truly an atmospheric venue though the lack of natural light can prove challenging for the photography. The wedding breakfast is held in the grand Dining Hall next door which has a capacity of up to 40 guests, a 17ft long dining table and a wonderful full wall length tapestry.

Finally there is the Guthrie Pavilion which is perfect for those larger weddings. The ceremony is held under the aches of the Italian Loggia (available from April to September) which is at the far end of the beautiful Italian Gardens overlooking the lake and has a capacity of up to 160 guests.
