A short and fascinating history of The Angel Posting House Guildford
Being on the main road from London to Winchester and the coastal towns of Southampton and Portsmouth the Inn had plenty of travelling customers especially soldiers and sailors and this bought it considerable prosperity. This however, was not to last though as the introduction of the compulsory billeting of soldiers in their barracks would have a drastic effect on it's income and The Angel was bankrupt in the 1870’s.
The next owners were local brewers and being at the height of travel by stagecoach it was probably at this time that the current frontage we see today was built: a stucco façade being added to the old timber framing and the signs ‘Posting House’ indicating that fresh horses could be hired and ‘Livery Stables’ indicating that the traveller’s horses could be looked after. In addition the hoist from the hayloft which is on the right of the Inn’s yard is another visible reminder of this period.
But the lucrative coaching trade, there were six coaching inns and over 30 beer houses in the High Street at this period, was to end with the arrival of the railway to Guildford in 1845.
Famous guests included Lord Nelson the authors Charles Dickens, Jan Austen and Lord Byron whilst more mysterious ones include sightings in the mirrors of ghosts of 19th century military soldiers in Room 1. In fact the ghost sighting extend from The Angel to the local Monsoon clothes shop, once an old prison, where sighting have been made in both the cellar and the first floor and up at Guildford Castle there have been various ghostly apparitions.
Luckily a move by property developers to turn this ancient inn into shops in 1989 was strongly opposed by the local public and so it remains as it is today.
Surrey wedding photographer opportunities at The Angel Posting House
The Angel Posting House or The Angel Hotel is a wonderful looking timber framed building with considerable character and history extending almost 500 years, making it a truly fascinating Surrey wedding venue for a wedding photographer interested in historical context.
It is an intimate and cosy hotel and so suits the smaller more intimate weddings. The Bronte Suite which has been refurbished has a capacity of up to 50 seated guests and was once the hotel’s ballroom and is used for both the wedding ceremony and the wedding breakfast. When waiting for the room to be made ready, the main areas for guests to gather is the comfortable and welcoming galleried lounge area which also an attractive place to relax and celebrate with champagne and canapés. It can get rather cosy when full to capacity but the wedding photographer can also take shots from the balcony above. Down on floor level and space allowing there are opportunities for some cosy wedding photos which can include the original ‘Parliamentary’ clock located by the main staircase which reminded the travellers of when their coaches were ready to leave or the marvellous Jacobean fireplace which in turn is surrounded by lovely rich wooden panelling.
For the Bride and Groom there are further opportunities in the library (also good for indoor group wedding pictures) and the cellar, but otherwise we suggest getting some fresh air and daylight by taking a quick walk over to nearby Guilford Castle which provides a wonderful backdrop for some lovely romantic wedding portraits.
