A short history of The Chateau Croydon
The Chateau was originally called Coombe Wood House when it was built in 1898 for Arthur Lloyd, the brother of Frank Lloyde, a newspaper magnate who ran the Lloyd Weekly Newspaper, later to be called The Sunday News and the Daily Chronicle. The building was later sold to Croydon Corporation after which it was used as both a convalescent and children's home. The ornamental gardens and woodland were opened to the public in 1948 and are still run by the Council today and are a popular attraction with an added café in the old stable block. The house became established in 1978 as the Chateau Napoleon, later to be know just as The Chateau. Set in plenty of green space between Shirley (Addington) Hills, Lloyd Park, Ballards and Combe Wood it still retains an air of the past as it still has its large houses without much more urbanisation and yet is only a few minutes away from busy Croydon town centre with Coombe Lane tram on its doorstep.
The Chateau Croydon wedding photographer opportunities
The welcoming oak panelled bar and dining area is a great place to capture wedding guests meeting before the marriage ceremony and also later as rooms are prepared for the days celebrations. It also leads out onto the terrace overlooking the beautiful and colourful Coombe Wood Gardens, the obvious star of this Surrey wedding venue.
The Garden Lounge, which suits parties of 20-40 wedding guests is adjacent to the bar and the oak panelled entrance hall and it too benefits from views over the Coombe Wood Gardens. The wedding ceremony is usually held in the warm wooden panelled restaurant and can accommodate approximately 50 guests and benefits from plenty of natural light enabling pictures throughout the service. The wedding breakfast and reception celebrations take place upstairs in the large Park View Suite, which has a capacity of up to 110 guests and again overlooks Coombe Wood Gardens. With its own dance floor and bar this is the place for the wedding photographer to hang around for some informal wedding photos as the Bride and Groom along with their guests get into the party spirit.
Additional rooms upstairs are The Napoleon Room, available for up to 20 guests and The Josephine Room for more intimate groups of up to 10 guests.
On a fine day especially during the warmer months the star attraction is the Coombe Wood Gardens which are divided into a series of garden 'rooms' to give an all year round display of beautiful mature plants and all set to a wonderfully calming and natural woodland backdrop. The gardens are are ideal area for the group wedding photographs and for taking the newly-weds off for some more personal and romantic wedding pictures away from the hustle and bustle of the reception.
All in all a very relaxed and informal wedding venue set is a tranquil relaxing setting and only a couple of miles drive for us.
