Clandon Park - A brief history
The Onslow family with their strong connections to politics and Parliament (three members became Speakers for the House of Commons) have been here in West Clandon since 1641 and their fortunes over 400 years have been reflected in the building at Clandon Park.
This wonderful Palladian mansion (Inspired by Andrea Palladio and based on symmetry, perspective and values of the formal classical architecture of the Ancient Greeks and Romans) was designed by the Venetian architect Giacomo Leonie around 1730-33 on invitation by the 2nd Lord Onslow and in so doing he completely demolished the Jacobean style manor House that previously existed.
The landscaped gardens were in turn designed by England’s greatest gardener Lancelot (Capability) Brown in1781. Since then a parterre (formal garden), grotto and sunken Dutch garden have been added. In addition there is an original Maori meeting house called Hinemihi which was brought over from Lake Tarawere, New Zealand in 1892. This hut had an important role during the eruption of Mount Tarewere in 1886, providing shelter to the village people from the volcanic debris.
In the First World War Clandon Park was used as a veterans hospital whilst in the Second World War it became a public records archive. It was finally acquired by the National Trust in 1956 and in their hands it has been extensively restored and redecorated. Today Clandon Park houses a wonderful collection of 18th century furniture along with porcelain and textiles built up and donated by the influential collector Hannah Gubbay as well as the Ivo Forde collection of Meissen Italian comedy figures, Mortlake tapestries and carpets and textiles. The Queen’s Royal Surrey regiment also has its museum based here.
