Wotton House is a beautiful 17th century home sitting in 20 acres of listed gardens in tranquil countryside and is a Surrey wedding venue that we love photographing as it offers so much variety for a wedding photographer.
Entered by a grand drive, you are met by a truly impressive building with its terracotta decorations on brickwork and octagonal turrets and stacks.
Wotton House - A brief history
Wotton House was first mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, originally being a moated manor house it was bought by the Evelyn family from the proceeds of their gunpowder mills. It was the birthplace of John Evelyn in 1620, the famous diarist and landscape gardener who created the first ever Italian Garden in England from between 1643 and 1652 after being inspired by the Italian Renaissance gardens he had seen on his Grand Tour of Italy.
The Tillingbourne Stream which runs through the estate crossing a small bridge that takes you to the impressive Pulhamite grotto (Pulhamite was a rock composite invented by James Pulham and has the look of gritty sandstone and used to join natural rocks together or to simulate them). Today the Wotton House gardens are Grade ll listed as are the two grottos.
During the Second World War Wotton House was used by the Canadian Army and it was leased in 1947 to the Home Office where it became the national headquarters of the Fire Service. Leased on to British Telecom in the early 1980's it came back to the Evelyn family in 1986 whereby the demolition of the post 1945 buildings commenced.
Surrey wedding photography opportunities at Wotton House
The Old Library with its wonderful vaulted ceiling, stone columns and large fireplace is a truly memorable room to get married in.
Dressed with flowers and sparkling lights the walk down the aisle for the Bride on her father's arm is as dramatic an image as you could wish for.
With plenty of natural light pouring in from one side through the stone mullioned windows, full and detailed coverage of the wedding ceremony is assured.
The final act of the Bride and Groom walking down the aisle through a shower of confetti set the happy and fun mood for the rest of the day's celebrations.
The elegant Turtle House which is situated to the right of the gardens is set in a walled garden complete with pond and is a truly special place to get married in. The walk from the garden door to the Turtle House enables all the wedding guests to experience the excitement of the arrival of the bride. This venue accommodates up to 138 people.
Another wonderful outside venue is in front of the dramatic Roman Temple with guests sitting just beyond the large fountain in the Italian gardens and though not as private as the Turtle House, it is certainly one that you would remember for a long time.
For the pre wedding drinks and post wedding celebratory drinks there is the snug and comfortable Orangery Bar which overlooks the gardens with direct access to the terrace and lawn. This can accommodate up to 150 guests and gets very busy prior to the wedding breakfast and later during the room changes for the night time celebrations.
The Evelyn Suite, which is a short distance from the Orangery Bar is a large room with doors opening onto the terrace and looking out onto the Italian Garden. It can accommodate up to 120 guests, usually for the wedding breakfast and is the focal point for all the evening and night time dancing and celebrations.
The Wotton Suite and the Drawing Room which also have direct access to the Italian Garden are elegantly styled rooms perfect for intimate parties of up to 50 guests.
And for further stunning wedding photographs there are the delightful and Grade ll listed Italian Garden with its dramatic white Roman style temples with towering columns.
Then there is the vast lawn, a stream with bridges and its two fascinating grottos.
Being so spoilt for choice it certainly helps to know your way around to get the very best vantage points for your wedding pictures.
We love working at Wotton House, it's a truly special Surrey wedding venue offering plently of fabulous photo opportunities as well as being welcoming, relaxed and informal.
